The Journey of Caregiving-Takeaways
By Andrea Young on June 15, 2022
We were thrilled to have Kate Granigan back to share her insights on the journey of caregiving. According to a 2020 report from The National Alliance for Caregiving, there are about 53 million Caregivers in the United States. In many cases, caregivers are taking care of loved ones and their own families while working careers outside the home. Kate talked about the caregiving process and the importance of caring for yourself too!
Your health matters
When you fly, the flight attendants always say, “in the event of an emergency, place your oxygen mask on yourself first, then help others.” The same is said for caregiving. If you are not well, you won’t be able to provide the necessary care required to your loved ones. The emotional and physical stress of caregiving can take its toll on your health, so prioritizing your wellbeing is critical.
Feeling overwhelmed
Being a caregiver can be rewarding but also overwhelming, which is why making your health a priority is a must. Listen to your body and acknowledge when you are feeling overwhelmed. Here are some suggestions to help you combat caregiver stress.
- Ask for help. Reach out to family and friends. Many local and national organizations have helpful resources.
- Take a break. Let others step in for you when you need a rest.
- Set boundaries. Saying no is hard but often necessary as not to risk burnout.
Embrace support
Many highs and lows accompany caregiving. Spending time and reconnecting with the ones you love can be wonderful, but it can be difficult watching your loved one decline. Whether it’s family, friends or outside resources, be sure you have a support system to help you through.
