Overcoming Obstacles to Healthy Eating- Takeaways
By Andrea Young on January 18, 2023
We are a society programmed to always be on the go. Our schedules are full of work obligations, household responsibilities and kids’ activities. It can be difficult maintaining healthy habits when your time is limited.
Dr. Nina Frusztajer kicked off our 2023 Empower Women Series with her discussion, Overcoming Obstacles to Healthy Eating. We all have the best intentions for our health, but life happens, and it’s sometimes easier to grab a quick takeout meal than cook a healthier option at home. Nina addressed the issues that come up regularly for most of us and gave us helpful tips to overcome these obstacles.
Focus on your mindset
What is your Why? Are you looking to lose weight, lower cholesterol or live a healthier lifestyle? Whatever your why is, be sure you eat healthy for what works for you. Make small changes to build healthy habits. Focusing on your mindset will help you reach your goals. Implementing drastic changes can cause you to become frustrated and overwhelmed, which might deter you.
Have compassion for yourself
We are our worst critics, always finding fault in something. Try not to judge yourself. These feelings have a lot to do with mindset and setting realistic goals. If you have a goal of losing five pounds in a week and don’t reach it, you may feel like you failed. Instead, measure your success in how you feel, not by a number. Try setting smaller goals like walking or exercising at least once a week and build on that gradually.
Planning ahead
Planning is easier said than done, especially when time is precious. If you can plan your meals every week, you will save time on the back end. Creating a menu for the week takes away the guessing of coming up with meals. You can take it a step further and do meal prep.
Other tips to help you eat healthier
- Buy pre-cut vegetables
- Buy frozen foods like fish or vegetables
- Double your recipe and freeze the extra for another day
- Keep your meals simple and easy to prepare
