Why We Need Movement
By Andrea Young on January 18, 2022
With the start of a new year, comes New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately for many, after a few weeks or months, the commitment to our resolutions wains. Having gone through another year of a pandemic with the stress, anxiety and isolation that it brings, many are looking for ways to make positive changes in their lives. One of the easiest and most important things you can do for your health is move. We were so fortunate to have Teresa Quinn kick off our 2022 series by talking about movement and why it’s so important to our health
Start small
By starting out with light exercise or movements, you can gradually work your way up and not get overwhelmed in the process. It could be small like doing a few morning stretches, or even a 15-minute walk. Sometimes it’s as simple as reframing your thinking. Instead of thinking of it as a resolution, think of it as a promise to yourself.
Find an accountability partner
When it comes to exercising, finding motivation can be the hardest part. If you are someone who finds it hard to go to the gym, or for a walk or run, having an accountability partner could be what you need. Having a partner or a group that keeps you motivated might just make the difference.
Incorporate your children
We teach our kids to tie their shoes and ride a bike, but it’s also important to teach them to build healthy habits, especially at a young age. Making exercise fun is a great way to get them excited. Again, it doesn’t have to be complicated – it might mean taking the dog for a walk or going for a bike ride. Starting young will build a foundation for a healthy lifestyle as they get older.
Simple Daily Movements
Jaw Wiggle-We hold a lot of tension in our jaw so doing a simple side to side wiggle motion can ease that.
Spine Twist– Keeping your arms loose at your sides, twist your body from side to side.
Bending Over– Bend from the hips allowing your head to hang upside down for a few moments.
Knees Side To Side– Lay on the floor with your knees together towards your chest and gently move your knees to either side.
* These simple daily movements can have a positive impact on your health.
